What Is an Argumentative Essay

 

An argumentative essay is a type of essay, which centers on a narrowed, asserted thesis statement that argues for one side of a debatable issue. It’s very similar to the persuasive and five-paragraph essays because it involves the student-writer ultimately making a point, an argument – hence the name of the essay type – they will be defending throughout their essay.

One’s instructor generally uses the rubric as a scoring template for evaluating an essay; however, the student faced with the writing assignment can use the rubric to their advantage by seeing what is expected of them in every aspect of completing the essay.

Introduction Well-developed introduction paragraph beginning with a relevant and effective topic sentence, followed by a solid background on the topic and finally a strong Thesis Statement. Conclusion Conclusion paragraph avoids redundancy when summarizing essay’s main points and effectively concludes the essay. The reader should have a clear idea of the essay’s argument. Conclusion paragraph summarizes main topics of essay in original way, but could more effectively conclude the essay. Conclusion paragraph summarizes main topics of the essay but fails to effectively conclude the essay. Conclusion paragraph does not summarize main topics, nor does it appropriately conclude the essay.
Main Points Body paragraphs have three or more main points that are well developed with supporting details that make a solid argument. Body paragraphs have three or more main points that lack further detail and/or development but still make a mediocre argument. Body paragraphs have three or more main points, all of which lack development, therefore weakening the argument. Body paragraphs lack three main points, and coupled with a poor development of ideas, it makes a weak argument.
Organization Logical flow with organized progression of ideas in essay; structure is easy to follow and reinforces essay’s central argument. Essay has effective, appropriate transitions. Essay is logically developed and moves the reader easily through the text. Lacks some smooth transitions from point to point, taking away from coherence. Progression in essay is hard to follow, transitions appear sporadically in parts, yet still continues to lead to a relatively decent argument. Essay’s arrangement is unclear and illogical and lacks a clear sense of direction. It lacks an identifiable internal structure. Transitions are either few, lacking altogether, or forced.
